Hawaii Car Insurance Laws
Hawaii law requires that motor vehicles on its' public streets
be insured at all times and the driver must carry an insurance
identification card. Hawaii is a no-fault state. Each insurance
company compensates its own policyholders for the cost of
minor injuries regardless of who was at fault in the accident.
The required minimum levels of coverage are:
Bodily Injury Liability coverage of at least $20,000 per person,
$40,000 per accident;
Property Damage coverage of at least $10,000 per accident;
and
Personal Injury Protection of at least $10,000 per person.
For some of the required coverage, you should consider buying
higher limits than the minimum required. There are also several
types of optional coverage that you can purchase for more
protection. These include: collision coverage, uninsured motorist,
and underinsured motorist coverage. Present Hawaii law prohibits
any premium increase as a result of an accident if you were
not at fault.
